The motor makes a little noise, but its not loud I don't know if noise is normal. The capstan rotates. One of the four knobs is a little loose and needs tightening, but it turns OK. Some wear, but not bad for a yr old piece.

Vintage Univox EC-80 tape echo it runs, but I don't know if works have a to test.
